Jessica Austin grew up in a family devastated by addiction. She carried this dysfunction into her adulthood, as she struggled to raise her two young sons, Donyol (6) and Brandale (4), while pregnant again and amidst a turbulent relationship with her estranged husband.

But, just one year ago, Lord of the Hills Lutheran Church answered the call to come alongside and help Jessica learn to manage her life, and they've witnessed many necessary and encouraging changes!

Last February, through the Family and Senior Homeless Initiative, Lord of the Hills Lutheran Church stepped in to help Jessica secure an apartment and establish a home for herself and her two sons.

Dana LinderHeiko Meyer, leader of Jessica's mentor team, and the other mentor team members rallied to a grateful Jessica, helping supply her with furniture, toys, access to the church's food bank, and financial assistance.  They also provided her with much-needed babysitting time, financial and career guidance, and loving emotional support.

Even though Jessica's caring and effective mentor team was helping provide her a strong foundation, she was having difficulty maintaining employment, and she also had a possible prison sentence looming. In spite of all the assistance she was receiving, her future was still looking grim.

But during this past year, through faith and persistence, Jessica's mentors helped her hang on, and today her life has turned around.

Jessica has been cleared of all legal charges, and she now has a steady job as a CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant).  Her first grade and preschool sons and baby girl are all doing well, and will again be attending Vacation Bible School this summer.  Jessica celebrated her first year in the apartment that her Lord of the Hills mentor team secured for her, and she's been able to renew her lease--on her own this time!

Jessica's mentor team will always be available to her, but their structured mentorship and meeting on a regular basis has come to a natural and fruitful end.   "She's on her own now, and our mission is complete," says a proud Heiko.  "She's really upbeat about her life now. She's turned a corner," he adds.

Lord of the Hills Lutheran Church faith mentors, you stayed the course and helped Jessica and her family through a rough time.  You provided the consistent care and encouragement necessary to help Jessica achieve self-sufficiency, overcome adversity, and learn how to take care of and provide for her children.  Her life will never be the same, thanks to you, faithful mentors!
