A Momentous Landmark

Thanks to the faith community's generosity, Denver Rescue Mission's dedication to the poor, and Mayor Hickenlooper's commitment to ending homelessness, five hundred formerly homeless seniors and families have now moved into permanent housing!  Remarkably, we have reached this milestone two years ahead of schedule.  Through the Family and Senior Homeless Initiative, those previously down-and-out have gained knowledge, found necessary resources and built relationships to help them remain self-sufficient for the rest of their lives.  We celebrate this 500 Family and Senior milestone and invite you to celebrate with us.  Thank you, congregations and mentors!  Without your generosity and hard work, this marvel would not be possible.  Know that your efforts are truly making a difference in our city!

“A relationship has to come first.  Before you do anything, you have to get to know them.”

Cheryl, mentor team member from True Light Baptist Church

“She had nobody at all to turn to.”

David, mentor team member from Atonement Lutheran Church

“I see a future for both mother and son.  I’ve seen understanding coming through.  And I’ve seen a sense of belonging they didn’t have before.”

Pastor Shane of Set Free Church of Denver

“The mentors are really good people, and they help me with everything I need to get done.  They would be the first people I would go to if I ever needed anything, ‘cause I know I can call them for anything.”

Juanita, mentored by the synagogue B’nai Havurah

"When you wrap the servant towel around your waist to help the poor and needy, you will find the work tough and messy at times, but you will be blessed beyond measure and changed forever."

Brad Meuli, President/CEO of the Denver Rescue Mission

"They are my family.  It’s just so wonderful."

Kim, mentored by Cherry Hills Community Church

"The synagogue and my Judaism tell me that I have a duty to work with all of God’s people … people who are made in the image of God.  I have a duty to help where and when I can."

Rabbi Schwartzman, member of the Mayor's Clergy Council, and leader through the Family and Senior Homeless Initiative

“She was just the smartest little gal I’d ever met – she was really very intelligent!  More mature than I was at that age.”

Elizabeth, speaking of the young mother she mentors through St. Martha's Episcopal Church

"Your heart cries out for the situation you see people going through.  If we can be an encouragement in their lives, a source of support, then we want to do that."

Latisha, mentor team member from Kinship Church

I wish that people could really see that in most instances, these families want the same things that everyone else has: a stable home."

Ellen, mentor team member from Clear Creek Valley Baptist Church

“I figured that when you go through stuff, the best thing you can do is to help others with the same problem."

Ron, mentor team member from Centerpoint Community Church

“I didn’t just get money to help me; I was given a brand new start.  I thank you, and my son thanks you.”

Roxanne, mentored through Rodef Shalom Synagogue
